Robert James Sykes Jr., had a huge heart

Robert James Sykes Jr. lived by his promise to keep his family happy.
A generous husband and father with a huge heart, Mr. Sykes gave everything he had to his wife and daughter.
“He always said to me, all I want in life is for you to be happy,” said Marie Sykes, Mr. Sykes' wife of 18 years. “He lived by those words. He really taught me and my daughter to really be able to laugh at ourselves. We had so much fun together. We had a lot of laughter, the three of us.”
Always one to pitch in with housework or have a cup of tea ready for his wife in the morning, Marie Sykes said her husband would walk to the ends of the earth for his family.
“He was the most selfless person I've ever known,” she said. “Nothing was too much trouble for anybody. Everything he did he did from the heart; [there were] never any strings attached.”
Mr. Sykes, a Langhorne resident, died April 7 of a rare form of dementia. He was 50.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Mr. Sykes lived in Philadelphia and Levittown before moving to Langhorne in 1998. He worked for 12 years at AAA in Philadelphia as a programmer analyst and was pursuing a master's degree at La Salle University's Bucks campus before his illness.
Mr. Sykes was more of a homebody, his wife said, who loved to work in the garden, read, and watch “Star Trek.”
“I think the yard work and the gardening was always therapeutic for him,” Marie Sykes said. “He really liked keeping a neatly groomed yard and garden. That was a great love of his.”
Mr. Sykes also liked to travel with his family. His favorite place was Disney World.
“He could let go and be a kid there,” his wife said. “It was acceptable to be an adult acting like a child there. Goofy was his favorite character.”
Like Goofy, Mr. Sykes had a penchant for laughter and fun.
“He was very flexible, very easygoing,” Marie Sykes said. “He was just a gem. I'm incredibly proud of him. He struggled through a very difficult disease. And he gave my daughter and I a second chance at life.

Robert James Sykes, Jr., age 50, of Langhorne died on Friday April 7, 2006, after a lengthy illness, at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Sykes was a resident of Levittown before moving to Langhorne in 1998. He was a 1979 graduate of Drexel University with a degree in Business Administration. Prior to his illness he was pursuing a MBA at LaSalle University, Bucks County Campus. Bob worked for AAA - Mid Atlantic in Philadelphia for 12 years as a Programmer Analyst. He was an avid reader, loved gardening, traveling, attending Phillies and Flyers games, and watching Star Trek.
Bob was the beloved husband of 18 years of Marie Sykes (nee Jensen); and father of his devoted daughter Michelle Stafford of Newtown. He will be sadly missed by his parents Robert and Mary Sykes of Lansdale; his sister Kathy McDowell and her husband Steve of Riverview, Fla.; three brothers Tom Sykes and his wife Diane of Glen Mills, Pa., John Sykes and his wife Rhonda of Downingtown, Pa., and Steve Sykes and his wife Kim of Collegeville, Pa. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lynn and Vince Sannelli and Shelley and Chuck Eckert, of Levittown; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.
